McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and the programs run through Title X, part C of No Child Left
Behind in Colorado. The Act provides specific resources and information for school district liaisons and
other audiences to ensure access to a free and appropriate public education for children and youth who are
homeless, and supports success in school once enrolled.


Mission Statement of McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act:
To ensure that each student under the McKinney Vento Act has equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, as other children and youth; and to connect families to appropriate community resources.



Who Are Homeless Children and Youth?


This includes children & youth who:                                 Click link to watch video

  • Share housing with other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason
  • Live in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lackof alternative adequate accommodations
  • Live in emergency or transitional shelters
  • Are abandoned in hospitals
  • Are awaiting foster care placement
  • Have a primary nighttime residence that is not designed for, or ordinarilyused as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings
  • Live in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings
  • Are migratory children living in the aforementioned circumstances
  • Are unaccompanied youth not in the physical custody of a parent orguardian who are living in the aforementioned circumstances

 Educational Rights for Homeless Children and Youth

  • Immediate enrollment in school
  • Free school meals
  • Assistance with obtaining school supplies
  • Assistance with necessary educational expenses
  • Transportation assistance to and from school, even if family relocates for the remainder of the current school year
  • Information about community resources
  • School selection- parents/guardians allowed to choose the school of origin, last enrolled or temporarily housed
  • Homeless children can receive same special programs and services, if needed
  • Children cannot be separated from the regular school programs because they are homeless...
